Lingerie Designer Interview: Jenna Leigh of Jenna Leigh Lingerie

I’ve been intrigued by Jenna Leigh Lingerie ever since I slipped on one of her best selling Malawai demi / skirt sets at Journelle some time ago. It made me feel playful, sexy and alluring all at once …(read: skirt + garter! hello!)… I may or may not have shimmied in the fitting room a liiiiittle bit ;) . The best part? We can wear it under anything – yes, even a pencil skirt – and no one would ever know. No wonder JL has such a loyal following: she’s got a knack for injecting some va-va-voom into a set that is otherwise entirely practical, and the end result is drop dead gorgeous. Not an easy feat.

I met Jenna at Bloomingdale’s uptown – we chatted over some bubbly while like minded ladies perused the new collection. My favorite? The new Malawai set in pretty pink and black lace (pictured below).

Your brand is one of my favorites! What inspired you to become a lingerie designer and how did the path unfold?

Thanks Lindsay! I was inspired to become a lingerie designer when I lived abroad in London. The intimates industry in the UK and throughout Europe is so much bigger than it is in the US. I wanted to bring back what inspired me and create an American brand inspired by those overseas. It took a lot of hard work and has been a challenging field to dive into. Lingerie still seems to be quite untouched in the States. I take it day by day and am enjoying the journey.

What is the story behind Jenna Leigh lingerie?

I created Jenna Leigh Lingerie for girls like “me.” I did not want to spend the higher prices for Agent Provocateur, Kiki and La Perla — but I also wanted something more refined than Victoria’s Secret. My brand falls between the two.

What do you love most about your career as a lingerie designer?

I love watching the lingerie industry grow and watching people start to care more and more about their “underneath” fashion. I also love the gorgeous fabrics I have the opportunity to work with… lace, silk, knits, etc.

Where does your passion for lingerie come from?

I have always been attracted to lingerie. I remember being with my mom in department stores as a little girl just wanting to look at the lingerie floors. I, of course, did not buy any back then, but I always found it rather beautiful and interesting to look at. I still do!

What kind of lady wears Jenna Leigh?

I won’t put an age on my customer, but she is a lady who likes to look sexy but never too over the top. Nothing in my line is too racey or risque. I think it’s both tasteful and sexy at the same time. There are styles in the line for the woman who prefers something simple, but there are also options for the high fashion lady who wants to try unique colors and designs. I try to make something for everyone!

What is your favorite piece for the line?

I have made so many pieces over the last three plus years, I cannot choose my one and only favorite. That being said, I tend toward the Namos collection because it’s super comfortable, the lace is stunning and the colors keep changing each season — I love them all. I also really love the loungewear groups. You have to look cute when you go to bed, right?!

Your favorite lingerie silhouette?

I like the balconette bra – it’s sexy enough for special occasions/night time, but also basic enough to wear daily.

Do you have a signature (could be a style, scent, favorite accessory) – if so, please indulge us!

Everyone who knows me knows I LOVE flowers. I always have fresh flowers in my home (in each room), and I spray rose water on my face morning and night. If I wear perfume, which is rarely, it’s a floral scent.

Last but not least, where can we buy Jenna Leigh?

Bloomingdale’s! We are at the Soho New York location, the 59th Street New York location and in Beverly Hills.

Thanks so much for your time Jenna!

Great blog post this is exactly the point I’m inrtyg to get across in mine, what we wear underneath really does matter and it does make a difference! You wouldn’t spend money on a perfect dress and killer heels, only to throw a tatty old jumper over the top, so why would you ruin the illusion and wear an ill fitting, washed out grey bra set underneath it all?!Anyway, really great series of posts, I look forward to up and coming ones xx
